But for an endeavor as unprecedented as colonizing another planet, you have to dream big—and plan ahead. That’s what an international team of scientists and other experts are doing, and they’ve come up with not just a design, but a full-fledged plan to build the first Martian city, complete with sustainable housing, food, transportation, and energy. Described in a paper published in...

Kenya, solar desalination -

Turning seawater into drinking water is typically an expensive and polluting process, but this group hopes to change that.   Turning seawater into potable water is typically an expensive and polluting process. Now, Climate Fund Manager and Solar Water Solutions have a revolutionary solution with zero carbon footprint.  The groups are working together to install up to 200 desalination units in Kitui County, Kenya. The project's long-term goal is to provide clean water to 400,000 Kenyans by 2023.  The total funding opportunity is estimated to be up to USD 15 million. green hydrogen, Japan, wind farms -

Hokkaido facility to churn out enough clean fuel for 10,000 vehicles   Japan's largest hydrogen plant powered by offshore wind energy is set to open on the northern island of Hokkaido as part of a national effort to slash carbon dioxide emissions. Scheduled to begin operation as early as the year ending March 2024, the plant will produce up to roughly 550 tons of hydrogen a year -- enough to fuel more than 10,000 hydrogen vehicles, according to plans. The effort represents a step toward creating a homegrown supply of hydrogen that is "green," or made using renewable energy. Green...

carbon buildings -

German architect Henn has joined forces with the Technical University of Dresden to complete the first building made from “carbon concrete”, which is reinforced by carbon fibre instead of steel. Much lighter and stronger than normal concrete, the carbon variety is claimed to cut the embodied carbon of a structure by half owing to the smaller quantities required. The carbon fibre is used as a matrix that a mixture of concrete and polymers is poured into. According to Henn, this gives a concrete that is four times lighter and four times stronger than normal, allowing thinner and more flexible designs....
