teTra Aviation, an aircraft manufacturing startup based in Tokyo, Japan, won the $100,000 Disruptor Award at the FoFly personal flight contest last year.       The startup has now unveiled the exclusive, single-seat eVTOL aircraft, dubbed the Mk-5, at the week-long EAA AirVenture event at the Wittman Regional Airport in Wisconsin. The fully electric personal aircraft is designed to be safe, quiet, and easy to manufacture. Forged from aluminum and carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP), the Mk-5 measures roughly 8.62 m (28.2 feet) wide, 6.15 m (20.2 ft) long, and 2.51 m (8.2 ft) high, and weighs around 488 kg when empty.   The aircraft...

DHL and Eviation today announced a pretty big moment in the developing history of electric aviation and specifically electric cargo aviation. Starting later this year, DHL will begin testing a fleet of 12 electric cargo planes from Eviation’s sole current model dubbed “Alice.” Deliveries will begin in 2024.   AD   The Alice planes look almost identical, save for some missing windows and seats and an additional 100lbs capacity, to the passenger version of the Eviation Alice plane we’ve talked about in the past, amusingly calling it the “Tesla of Aviation.” It now boasts around 440NM of range or just over 500 miles...

self -drive, trucking -

This shipment of watermelons was a day fresher than it would have been because autonomous trucks can move nearly continuously, without breaks.   Self-driving cars are taking longer to come to market than many expected. In fact, it’s looking like they may be outpaced by pilotless planes and driverless trucks, with self-driving technology already coming in handy on long-haul trucking routes, as a recent cross-country trip showed. Last month TuSimple, a transportation company focused on self-driving technology for heavy-duty trucks, shipped a load of watermelons from Arizona to Oklahoma using an autonomous system for over 80 percent of the journey. The starting point was Nogales, at...

energy storage, molten salts -

As renewable forms of power like wind and solar continue to gain prominence, there will be a need for creative solutions when it comes to storing energy from sources that are intermittent by nature. One potential solution is known as a molten salt battery, which offers advantages that lithium batteries do not, but have their share of kinks to iron out, too. Scientists at Sandia National Laboratories have come up with a new design that addresses a number of these shortcomings, and demonstrated a working molten salt battery that can be constructed far more cheaply, while storing more...

KEY POINTS Lilium plans to sell 220 of its vehicles for up to $1 billion to Brazilian airliner Azul. The two firms said on Monday that they plan to build an eVTOL (electric vehicle takeoff and landing) aircraft network across Brazil between now and 2025. The aviation industry is under intensifying pressure to look at new ways of powering their carriers as policymakers publicly acknowledge the necessity of transitioning to a low-carbon society.   ilium, a German start-up making electric jets that can take off and land vertically, has announced plans to sell 220 of its vehicles for up to...
