Earth Stargate Network, Stargates, Starports -

Right now it seems entirely possibly that the spaceports will be launch-ready long before the spaceships are; of the rocket’s first five high-altitude flights, three exploded on contact during landing and the fourth exploded a few minutes after landing. The fifth flight, which just took place a month ago, was explosion-free and thus successful. To get to the three-a-day launches Musk envisions, though, SpaceX will need a far better scorecard than one out of five. On the plus side, the company did just hit a significant milestone in reusability when one of its B1051 boosters completed its tenth flight over the course of...

Starlink -

POINTS Measuring 32 miles long and 13 miles wide, the Isle of Man is a British Crown dependency that sits in the middle of the Irish Sea roughly equidistant from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Starlink already has bases in Buckinghamshire and Cornwall in England, and the Isle of Man base will enable the company to provide blanket internet coverage across Britain.  Starlink’s Isle of Man ground station can be seen on the Starlink.sx website.   Starlink, the space internet service created in 2015 by Elon Musk’s space transportation firm, SpaceX, has set up a “ground station” on a tiny...

metamaterials, self-healing -

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Scientists from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata and IIT Kharagpur have discovered a new class of material which, when fractured, can repair themselves within milliseconds. This research has been published in Science ("Autonomous self-repair in piezoelectric molecular crystals"). The highly crystalline materials, when broken into pieces, can self-propel and re-join in the blink of an eye, and repair themselves so precisely that they become indistinguishable from the undisturbed materials. These new materials may find applications in various high-tech applications. Micrographs of crystals of 1 exhibiting self-healing. Repeat self-healing cycles are shown in panels 1...

Aquacities, energy harvest, oceans -

Traditional power generation is not ideal for marine exploration challenges, but the solution may be in the water’s motion. Researchers have developed sphere-based triboelectric nanogenerators that can be incorporated directly into navigational buoys to provide electricity from ocean waves. To find a power source for buoys, look no further than the ocean itself. During the AIP Publishing Horizons — Energy Storage and Conversion virtual conference, which will be held August 4-6, 2021, Cátia Rodrigues, from the University of Porto, will discuss the prospects of using power generators in the ocean to address the energy concerns of marine exploration. The presentation,...

Alberta, innovation, investment -

Through Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), the Government of Canada has invested $5 million in an Alberta Innovates initiative designed to draw technology and business accelerators to the province. The funding for Alberta Innovates’ Scale Up and Growth Accelerator Program comes through the Regional Innovation Ecosystem (RIE) program, which WD has been tasked with administering investments from in the region.   The fresh federal capital comes in addition to the up to $25 million previously committed by Alberta Innovates to the initiative. “Business growth and scale-up is critically important to Alberta’s technology-based businesses,” said Laura Kilcrease. A total of up...
