German renewable energy company Baywa r.e., the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, and partners have built a 258 kW agrivoltaic system for apples in the north of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to test whether such systems can provide plant protection against harmful environmental influences. The five-year research project is financed by the State Ministry of Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, and Mobility of the Land of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The project occupies a surface of 9,100 square meters, and the agrivoltaic system covers a third of a plot. For the next five years,...

The future of agriculture is computerized Machine learning can reveal optimal growing conditions to maximize taste and other features. What goes into making plants taste good? For scientists in MIT’s Media Lab, it takes a combination of botany, machine-learning algorithms, and some good old-fashioned chemistry. Using all of the above, researchers in the Media Lab’s Open Agriculture Initiative report that they have created basil plants that are likely more delicious than any you have ever tasted. No genetic modification is involved: The researchers used computer algorithms to determine the optimal growing conditions to maximize the concentration of flavorful molecules known as volatile...

Open Agriculture (OpenAg) was active from January 2015 to April 2020   The MIT Media Lab Open Agriculture Initiative (OpenAg) builds open resources to enable a global community to accelerate digital agricultural innovation. We believe the precursor to a sustainable food system will be the creation of an open-source ecosystem of technologies that enable and promote transparency, networked experimentation, education, and hyper-local production.  We bring together partners from industry, government, and academia in a  research collective that's creating collaborative tools and communities to explore  future agricultural systems. https://www.media.mit.edu/groups/open-agriculture-openag/overview
