Flying robots can do warehouse inventory way faster than humans Warehouses offer all kinds of opportunities for robots. Semi-structured controlled environments, lots of repetitive tasks, and humans that would almost universally rather be somewhere else. Robots have been doing great at taking over jobs that involve moving stuff from one place to another, but there are all kinds of other things that have to happen to keep warehouses operating efficiently. Corvus Robotics, a YC-backed startup that's just coming out of stealth, has decided that they want to go after warehouse inventory tracking. That is, making sure that a warehouse knows...

Cassie the robot, invented at Oregon State University and produced by OSU spinout company Agility Robotics, has made history by traversing 5 kilometers, completing the route in just over 53 minutes. Cassie was developed under the direction of robotics professor Jonathan Hurst with a 16-month, $1 million grant from the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. Since Cassie's introduction in 2017, OSU students funded by the National Science Foundation have been exploring machine learning options for the robot. Cassie, the first bipedal robot to use machine learning to control a running gait on outdoor terrain, completed the...

A Little Robot That Cleans the Beach, One Butt at a Time An AI beach buggy named BeachBot has a very specific mission: cleaning up after smokers.     No, it's not Wall-E. Its name is BeachBot, and it's on a mission to make beaches cleaner, one butt at a time. Cigarette butt, that is. The BeachBot robot, or BB for short, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to focus its artificial eyes on one thing—cigarette butts. The beach rover, measuring about 2.5 feet wide, plucks cigarette butts out of the sand with its two gripper arms and deposits them into an on-board storage compartment...
