raptors, SpaceX -

SpaceX's Starship is set for a powerful upgrade. Here's what you need to know.   THE RAPTOR, SPACEX’S ROCKET ENGINE designed to send humans to Mars and beyond, is getting a sequel. Last week, CEO Elon Musk wrote on Twitter that the company plans to build an engine known as “Raptor 2.” This would be a more powerful version of the Raptor engine, currently being used for the under-development Starship vehicle. SPACEX STARSHIP: WHAT IS RAPTOR 2? It’s a more powerful, tweaked version of the existing Raptor engine.   This engine has been used for test flights with Starship prototype models, the most recent of...

Researchers at Rice University, led by chemist James Tour and graduate student Weiyin Chen, developed a process to turn carbon from various sources into valuable forms like graphene or diamond. The technique involves heating the carbon with a flash of electricity, and the transition is instant. The best part is they can “evolve” the carbon through phases, converting it into a final form that’s determined by the flash length. Meaning, they can get the product they want by stopping the flash at designated times. The mechanism for the phase evolution of fluorinated flash nanocarbons, by Rice University chemists, shows stages with...

An American research and development company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT), has revealed HyperPort, a sustainable high-speed cargo and freight solution capable of increasing capacity and efficiency while decreasing pollution and congestion at ports worldwide. The system, developed in partnership with terminal operator Hamburg Hafen und Logistik AG, is now going into certification design review. The company says the next step will be a VR demonstration that will be presented at ITS World Congress in Hamburg from 11 to 15 October 2021. The technology should serve as a model for shipping containers in sea and inland waterways using Hyperloop technology. None of this...

Two research teams, using data from the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter, have recently published results suggesting that what were thought to be subsurface lakes on Mars may not really be lakes at all.  In 2018, scientists working with data from the Mars Express orbiter announced a surprising discovery: Signals from a radar instrument reflected off the red planet’s south pole appeared to reveal a liquid subsurface lake. Several more such reflections have been announced since then. The bright white region of this image shows the icy cap that covers Mars’ south pole, composed of frozen water and frozen carbon...

A team of engineers from the China University of Science and Technology has demonstrated what they believe to be the world’s most powerful quantum computer. The team says their quantum computer completed a calculation in just over an hour that would take the world’s most powerful classical supercomputer eight years to crack. This is the latest global milestone in a series of fascinating quantum computing advancements over the past two years. During this period, researchers across the world finally reached the long-sought-after ‘quantum supremacy’ – the point at which quantum computing can solve a problem that would take an impractical time for classical computing....
