research yacht -

With enough space for 160 scientists, the vessel also features 22 state-of-the-art laboratories for oceanic research Explorer vessels typically feature some sort of research laboratory, but apparently, the word typical isn’t in Iddes Yachts‘ vocabulary. The international design firm, led by naval architect Iván Salas Jefferson, has unveiled a bold new concept that is less like an expedition vessel and more like a seafaring alien ship from the future. The striking behemoth has been dubbed Earth 300‚ with a stated mission to carry out research expeditions in order to “confront earth’s greatest challenges,” according to Jefferson. Featuring naval architecture by NED, it spans an insane 984 feet—300 meters, hence the...

ships, submarine -

The 256-foot boat doubles as a fully functional submarine capable of diving to depths of 985 feet for up to 10 days at a time.   If you’re fortunate enough to own a superyacht, chances are you want to show it off. But for at least one yacht designer, the greatest luxury a boat can offer may be the ability to disappear.  Witness the new superyacht concept dreamed up by naval architect Elena Nappi. Dubbed the Carapace, the hybrid vessel is engineered to cruise the high seas both above and below the water:     Even if this was your run-of-the-mill traditional superyacht,...

agriculture, food -

The future of agriculture is computerized Machine learning can reveal optimal growing conditions to maximize taste and other features. What goes into making plants taste good? For scientists in MIT’s Media Lab, it takes a combination of botany, machine-learning algorithms, and some good old-fashioned chemistry. Using all of the above, researchers in the Media Lab’s Open Agriculture Initiative report that they have created basil plants that are likely more delicious than any you have ever tasted. No genetic modification is involved: The researchers used computer algorithms to determine the optimal growing conditions to maximize the concentration of flavorful molecules known as volatile...

Open Agriculture (OpenAg) was active from January 2015 to April 2020   The MIT Media Lab Open Agriculture Initiative (OpenAg) builds open resources to enable a global community to accelerate digital agricultural innovation. We believe the precursor to a sustainable food system will be the creation of an open-source ecosystem of technologies that enable and promote transparency, networked experimentation, education, and hyper-local production.  We bring together partners from industry, government, and academia in a  research collective that's creating collaborative tools and communities to explore  future agricultural systems. https://www.media.mit.edu/groups/open-agriculture-openag/overview

green mining, sustainability -

Scientists at the Earth Sciences department of the University of Oxford demonstrate how to directly extract valuable metals from hot salty fluids (brines) trapped in porous rocks at roughly 2km below dormant volcanoes. They propose that this green-mining approach will sustainably provide essential metals for a net-zero future.   Magma underneath volcanoes releases metal-rich gasses that ascend toward the surface. These gases separate into brine and steam as the pressure drops. Most of the dissolved metals in the original magmatic gas become concentrated in the dense brine, which gets trapped in porous rock. The less-dense and metal-depleted steam continues to rise to...
