These 7 countries and companies are going to Mars in the 2020s
Here's what the world's space agencies hope to learn about the Red planet. Three nations have plans to send unmanned missions to Mars in summer 2020: the United States, China, and the United Arab Emirates. SpaceX has discussed executing both manned and unmanned Mars missions this decade, though the company describes these dates as "aspirational." Each space agency plans to study a different aspect of Mars, though searching for signs of past life is a common theme among the missions. Putting humans on Mars is the next giant leap in space exploration, yet it remains a far-off goal for national...
Bipedal robot makes history by learning to run, completing a 5K
Cassie the robot, invented at Oregon State University and produced by OSU spinout company Agility Robotics, has made history by traversing 5 kilometers, completing the route in just over 53 minutes. Cassie was developed under the direction of robotics professor Jonathan Hurst with a 16-month, $1 million grant from the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. Since Cassie's introduction in 2017, OSU students funded by the National Science Foundation have been exploring machine learning options for the robot. Cassie, the first bipedal robot to use machine learning to control a running gait on outdoor terrain, completed the...
Converting renewable electricity into stable molecules could provide long-term energy storage
For renewable energy and energy storage technologies, variation is the name of the game. The intensity of the natural resources that provide renewable energy varies from day to day, as well as season to season. Spring brings high winds to scour the deserts and fills rivers with snowmelt. Summer is synonymous with long sunlit hours before the days shorten as fall transitions into winter. We need a multitude of ways to store renewable energy that match how we use it, from batteries to fuel cells. Batteries work well for shorter duration storage, on the order of hours to days....
Tesla Megapack batteries sold out “through the end of 2022”
In the second-quarter earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared that the Megapack is sold out up to the end of next year. “We have a significant unmet demand in stationary storage. Megapack is basically sold out through the end of next year, I believe,” Elon Musk said while answering a question from New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu. He also stated that Tesla has a massive backlog in Powerwall demand. A few weeks before the earnings call, Tesla updated the order page of the Megapack with new details and prices. The new order page reveals that the Megapack has a starting...
New modified-Tesla ride-share launching from electric moped sharing service Revel
Electric moped-sharing company Revel is discovering that “the more wheels the merrier” as the brand launches its first Tesla-powered ride-share program in NYC. AD While Revel began by operating a ride-sharing service using two-wheeled electric scooters or mopeds, the company has shown a desire to expand into four-wheelers. The first pivot earlier this year involved Revel-branded electric car charging stations. Now the company is going full-Tesla and launching a ride-sharing service using the leading electric vehicle company’s latest crossover, the Tesla Model Y. But this isn’t just some Tesla-based Uber service. The drivers will be fully fledged Revel employees receiving...
