York University leads $318.4M first-of-kind inclusive next-gen technology research initiative
April 28, 2023 Together with Queen’s University, the cross-disciplinary work is backed by $105.7M in federal funding through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund TORONTO, April 28, 2023 — Is an equitable world that includes humans and machines possible? York University researchers believe it must be and have set out to make it so through a first of its kind interdisciplinary research initiative called Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society. From universities to industries, hospitals and policymakers, artists and Indigenous communities, York’s Connected Minds will engage 50+ community partners and research collaborators over seven years supported by a...
Largest-ever federal university grant awarded for AI and robotics research, as part of $1.4B fund
The Canadian government unveiled Friday which 11 universities will be receiving a portion of nearly $1.4 billion in funding for research on new technology like artificial intelligence, robotics, carbon capturing and health care. The funds are being provided through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), which aims to boost research in Canadian post-secondary institutions. Receiving the single largest grant in the program's history is the University of Toronto, which has been granted a total of $199.5 million over seven years. Ten other schools across the country are also receiving federal funding: McGill University: $165 million for DNA to RNA: An Inclusive...
Canadian gov confirms talk with Tesla (TSLA) and other automakers about a factory
The Canadian government has confirmed that it is talking with Tesla (TSLA), along with other automakers, about building an electric vehicle factory in the country. TESLA CANADA FACTORY Over the past few months, we have been reporting on evidence that Tesla has been looking at a potential location in Canada for its next Gigafactory. Tesla plans to ramp up production to 20 million electric vehicles by the end of the decade, and it is expected to need about eight more Gigafactories to do it. In June, Electrek obtained a recording of a companywide meeting held by Tesla CEO Elon Musk,...

Canada is pushing to provide incentives for at least two new massive carbon capture projects by 2030, a federal government document showed, with nearly a dozen oil and gas companies already pursuing rights to store carbon dioxide in Alberta’s vast underground caverns. Canada’s four existing projects, representing 15 per cent of global facilities, currently capture 4 million tonnes per year, according to the Canadian government. The hubs to collect carbon from clusters of emitters would advance Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s goal of cutting emissions by 40-45 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030. The global oil industry is betting heavily that...

The writing’s been on the wall for coal for awhile, and in 2020, it just couldn’t compete with renewable energy when it came to new installations. Fossil fuels lost more ground to wind and solar in 2020 That’s according to a new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which found that 62 per cent of renewable energy capacity that came online last year cost less to install than the cheapest fossil fuel option. In real terms, that’s a total of 162 GW that was cheaper to install than coal, around double what it was in 2019. The costs of...
