Decentralized Energy, microgrids, Tesla Energy -

A new competitor is attacking the German energy market - with a sonorous name: Tesla. Hardly noticed by the public, the electric car pioneer introduced its first tariff for green electricity and is causing a stir in the industry.   "We take Tesla very seriously and watch exactly what they are up to," says one of the major German electricity companies. Tesla not only sells electric cars, but has also been selling electricity storage systems and solar roofs for a number of years - and now also electricity. In this country, the first electricity tariff from Tesla boss Elon...

China, StarCities -

Crewed space missions call for colossal engineering projects.   Case in point, researchers in China are investigating the possibility of assembling a spacecraft in orbit. The project is part of the nation's ambitions to expand space exploration, which encompasses crewed missions operating on long-term timescales.   The proposal from the National Natural Science Foundation of China calls for an analysis of the mechanics of constructing an "ultra-large spacecraft spanning kilometers", according to an initial report from the South China Morning Post.   In other words, China just told the world it's interested in building a spacecraft that is miles long....

Tesla (TSLA) has officially started Model Y deliveries in Europe. It was a long wait for customers, and interestingly the first deliveries were achieved through a change in strategy for Tesla.   Tesla first unveiled the Model Y in March of 2020 and delivered the first units of the electric SUV in the US almost exactly a year later. Like any new introduction from Tesla, European buyers generally have to wait until the Fremont factory starts producing batches of European versions of the new cars and ships them to the old continent. However, the automaker announced a change in strategy...

biosphere management, climate change -

The smokestack of a ship might help us deal with spiking levels of methane. By Bill McKibben I’ve long felt that one of my great failings as a climate communicator has come in trying to get across the dangers posed by methane, the second most damaging greenhouse gas, after carbon dioxide. Despite long years of many people trying to underscore the risks of methane, our go-to shorthand for climate pollution remains “carbon.” That’s why companies and political leaders boast about how much they’ve reduced their carbon emissions, but, if they managed the trick by substituting gas for coal, their total contribution to global...
