GasToPower, Life Molecules, PowerToGas -

Abstract In the transition to decarbonized energy systems, Power-to-Gas (PtG) processes have the potential to connect the existing markets for electricity and hydrogen. Specifically, reversible PtG systems can convert electricity to hydrogen at times of ample power supply, yet they can also operate in the reverse direction to deliver electricity during times when power is relatively scarce. Here we develop a model for determining when reversible PtG systems are economically viable. We apply the model to the current market environment in both Germany and Texas and find that the reversibility feature of unitized regenerative fuel cells (solid oxide) makes them...

Integrated reversible power-to-gas systems can also convert hydrogen back to electricity as a backup power source surprisingly economically, new research finds.  A major challenge for producers of electricity from solar panels and wind turbines is akin to capturing lightning in a bottle. Both solar and wind increasingly generate electricity amid little demand, when market prices are too low to cover costs. At noon on sunny days, for example, wholesale power prices in areas with high quantities of solar and wind occasionally fall below zero.     A reversible solid-oxide fuel cell system in Dresden, Germany. (Image credit: Sunfire GmbH) Some renewable...

Google, MAPS -

Google launched a new mode for Maps on Wednesday, designed to give users a more real-life look at the places they’re going before they even go.   The new Immersive View is sort of a Street View in the sky: you can look over a location from above to get a sense of the neighborhood and then drop to street level to see the specific spots you might want to hit up. Maps overlays its live busyness and traffic info, so you get a quasi-augmented reality look at whatever park or street corner or beach spot you’re looking at. The images behind...

Starport Network, Starports -

Last month, The New Yorker magazine published a story about plans to build a spaceport on Lake Superior in Upper Michigan to launch rockets. The idea was to put the launch facility on the lake to be far enough from local communities to eliminate risk and noise from operating the facility which would serve to launch rockets to low-Earth-orbit. The story noted that this would make Upper Michigan the next U.S. spaceport joining thirteen others in existence. The author got the number wrong. Today in the United States there are twenty spaceports already operating. The list includes one in Alaska, Colorado, Georgia, New...
