How to teach AI to imitate human thought and action
Artificial intelligence systems can mimic some aspects of human intelligence with impressive results, including detecting objects, navigating environments, playing chess, or even generating text. But cloning human behavior has its limitations. Without backing actions with thought, AI systems can become brittle and make unpredictable mistakes when faced with novel situations. One recent project by scientists at the University of British Columbia and Vector Institute shows the benefits of getting AI systems to think like humans. They propose a technique called “Thought Cloning,” which trains the AI on thoughts and actions at the same time. Thought cloning can enable deep learning models to...
The Hero Archetype
Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology, who introduced the concept of archetypes as part of his theory of the collective unconscious. One of the most prominent archetypes identified by Jung is the Hero archetype, which represents a universal pattern of human behavior that can be found in myths, literature, and religious traditions across cultures. The Hero archetype is characterized by a strong desire to achieve greatness and to overcome obstacles, often at great personal risk. This archetype is associated with qualities such as bravery, courage, and determination, and it is often represented as a figure...
Our AI Philosophers tackle the Trolley Problem
Trolley problem is the name given to a thought experiment in philosophy and psychology. The trolley problem is a thought experiment in ethics about a fictional scenario in which an onlooker has the choice to save 5 people in danger of being hit by a trolley, by diverting the trolley to kill just 1 person. The term is often used more loosely with regard to any choice that seemingly has a trade-off between what is good and what sacrifices are "acceptable," if at all. This is the question as we posited it to our AI Philosophers: You are riding in a trolley without functioning...
Reflexion: an autonomous agent with dynamic memory and self-reflection
To assess our approach, we evaluate the agent's ability to complete decision-making tasks in AlfWorld environments and knowledge-intensive, search-based question-and-answer tasks in HotPotQA environments. We observe success rates of 97% and 51%, respectively, and provide a discussion on the emergent property of self-reflection. Recent advancements in decision-making large language model (LLM) agents have demonstrated impressive performance across various benchmarks. However, these state-of-the-art approaches typically necessitate internal model fine-tuning, external model fine-tuning, or policy optimization over a defined state space. Implementing these methods can prove challenging due to the scarcity of high-quality training data or the lack of well-defined state space....
'Sparks of AGI' - Bombshell GPT-4 Paper: Fully Read w/ 15 Revelations
Less than 24 hours ago a paper was released that will echo around the world. I read all 154 papers in one sitting. The paper suggests GPT 4 has ‘sparks of Artificial General Intelligence’. This is not just hype, I go through 15 examples detailing just what exactly the unrestrained GPT 4 is capable of. Insane highlights include the monumental ability to use tools effectively – this is an emergent capability not found in ChatGPT. I detail the kind of tools it has already demonstrated it can use, from using external APIs to being a true personal assistant, from a...
