Following the unexpected cancellation of our Reverse Q&A at Brown University, we created an ad hoc event on the streets of Portland. Here, we are exploring the reasoning behind agreement or disagreement with the claim: "There are only two genders." We were approached by a group of students and here's what happened. In early May, my team explored the following claim with students: "Trans women should be able to compete in women’s sports.” After about 25 minutes of discussion, one student asked, “What’s the goal of this?” The idea of examining beliefs seemed utterly foreign to her. Universities have a responsibility to provide students with tools to think through claims and exchange in fruitful inquiry. They are failing. Should EVERY Pronoun Be Accommodated?
In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Peter Boghossian asked three men to consider the claim, “Preferred pronouns should always be respected.” The participants discussed grammar rules, language clarity, compelled speech, and the difference between belief and respect. Potential limits to pronoun accommodation were considered, including the use of genderless “neopronouns.” One man suggested extracting words for new pronouns from Native American languages (with permission, of course, to avoid appropriation). This claim at the University of California Berkeley raises the stakes: "Trans women should be legally treated as women."
