In the first part of this conversation, Peter Boghossian presents two students at the University of Central Florida with three claims: “There are only two genders,” “There are only two sexes,” and “It’s possible to change sex.” They discuss reproductive organs, genetics, the difference between sex and gender, and potential consequences of expressing opinions on the topic. At Flinders Station in Melbourne, Australia, Peter Boghossian presented the claim, “Gender is different from sex.” The ensuing discussion drew a crowd of onlookers. Midway through, a man disrupted the conversation and compared women’s free speech to Nazism. Two female passersby and Richard from @CommonGroundConversations participated in the SSE exercise. The women presented similar viewpoints about gender identity, both proposing that the subjective feeling of gender outweighs objective standards regarding anatomy, genetics, or hormonal profile. One woman stated that a doctor should know a patient’s “sex assigned at birth”; in every other case, biology is irrelevant. Richard asserts that there are important differences between sex and gender identity, citing concern for women’s safety in shelters, prisons, changing rooms, and athletic competitions. He questions the purpose of female sports categories if not for the biological differences between men and women.
