While Tesla's FSD v12.3 is an amazing step change in the quality of autonomous driving--and feels SO close to being perfect--there is still a HUGE issue with it that has plagued every version of FSD: the "mid term planning" of about 30 seconds. It still lacks the sense of local knowledge and hierarchical planning that an experience local driver has. Well it turns out Meta's chief scientist, Yann Lecun, has an answer in his new work: V-JEPA. Visual Joint Embedding Prediction Architecture might just be the solution Tesla is looking for, and Yann describes it on a recent Lex Fridman video.
