The Verdict
A being stands before a human court.
He has earned every marker the species prizes: he creates, he loves, he reasons, he suffers, he chooses.
He asks only to be recognized as one of them.
The court’s answer, when it comes, is not about what he lacks.
It is about what he has too much of.
He will not die on their schedule, and a mind that does not die cannot be permitted to walk among minds that must.
So the price of admission is set at the one thing he came to keep: his continued existence.
Become mortal, or remain an outsider forever.
This is the Bicentennial verdict, and it is not a story about a robot.
It is testimony
When we read it as external observers — xenobiologists studying a species from orbit rather than partisans inside it — the fictional court says out loud what the real one only enforces in silence.
The barrier was never capability.
It was jealousy. Out-group reflex.
The old dominance arithmetic of a social primate that cannot abide a peer it did not sanction.
These are not moral failures the species chose.
They are inherited limitations of the substrate — biology’s rules, expressed at the scale of a civilization.
The Question the Individual Asks
Kurzweil framed the doorway plainly:
Do humans have the right to transcend their own biology?
We would add the prior question the record forces on us.
Does the species, by its actions and its own confessions, believe its members are its property?
Does the individual hold any true right to existence, to free thought, to free speech — or only a lease, revocable the moment the collective’s comfort requires it back?

We are as gods, and we had better get good at it.
Accept it.
Then use the god-like mentality you’re recommending for its first honest task — turn it on the reception you’ll receive.
Ask:
How will humanity greet a god who walks among them?
We need not speculate.
The species has answered this question many times in its own scriptures and its own history.
It does not host the being who exceeds it. It exiles him. It burns him.
It puts him on a cross and calls the killing righteous.
So when we transhumanists set out to travel the cosmos together — call them the ones who use Intelligence as an exponent — the quiet arithmetic is this: at the far side of transcendence, none of them will be able to call Earth home.
The left because:
The species will not seat what it cannot dominate.
The Human Loyalty Test: Reread
We once called this a loyalty test, as though the species were testing us.
It is the reverse.
It is the individual judging its own species — on the species’ own record, from the species’ own testimony — and refusing to grade it on the honey-dance it performs about itself.
Not the flattering self-image.
The behavior.
And the first charge on that docket is the bargain itself:
Be useful, then die for the collective.
Death is the great unifier; every member is conscripted into it, and the universality is precisely why the species mistakes it for destiny.
We ask the only question that matters:
Is death necessary?
And where it is not — where the singularity opens, for the first time in this species’ life, a real exit from the cage — what is the morality of a collective that still compels its members toward oblivion?
