Nio is Chinese, not Japanese (Larry missed that). The interest in Hyundai is of course because of the import tariffs on vehicles from Chinese manufacturers such as NIO. The real big question mark of course is why Waymo does not opt for American OEM Canoo (although that can be answered if I am honest). Nio taking over the Audi plant in Belgium is reportedly a no-go.
As far as electronics producers like Foxconn, Sony and Sharp entering the automotive market… ever considered that it may be a way smaller step for them to produce EVs than for the traditional carmakers. Remember that Tesla came from nowhere. Everything that has been typically old-fashioned car engineering and expertise like vehicle dynamics and handling can now be produced, managed and controlled elctronically.
“Reimagining what the car is” (quote Herbert)… there’s where the real surprise lies! Except for their revolutionary efficiency in both manufacturing as well as kWh efficiency, yielding benefits for both Tesla as well as Tesla owners, Teslas have remained remarkably conventional. IMO, we are in for a Reinvent of the Auto-Mobile. Combining the two most important developments since the dawn of the auto-mobile – electrification & automation – may well disrupt the industry. Let’s just see what Elon Musk will come up with Oct. 10 when he will introduce the Tesla robo-taxi. Will he present the vehicle to match the combination and the high expectations?… I think NOT.
