The women presented similar viewpoints about gender identity, both proposing that the subjective feeling of gender outweighs objective standards regarding anatomy, genetics, or hormonal profile. One woman stated that a doctor should know a patient’s “sex assigned at birth”; in every other case, biology is irrelevant. Richard asserts that there are important differences between sex and gender identity, citing concern for women’s safety in shelters, prisons, changing rooms, and athletic competitions. He questions the purpose of female sports categories if not for the biological differences between men and women. In early May, my team explored the following claim with students: "Trans women should be able to compete in women’s sports.” After about 25 minutes of discussion, one student asked, “What’s the goal of this?” The idea of examining beliefs seemed utterly foreign to her. Universities have a responsibility to provide students with tools to think through claims and exchange in fruitful inquiry. They are failing.
